At Ruby Light Portraits in Plymouth, newborn photography is about more than just the baby: It’s about you, too. Mamas often shy away from the camera in those first weeks, but you deserve to be in the frame. With the option of professional hair and makeup and a selection of flattering dresses in my studio, you’ll feel relaxed, cared for, and confident during your session. You’ve done something extraordinary! Let’s celebrate that, together.
We also welcome partners and siblings into the session, creating tender portraits that tell the story of your growing family. These images will become part of your family’s legacy. They will be something your child will treasure in the years to come.

what to expect from your newborn in Plymouth, Devon
Before your session, I’ll send a welcome guide to help you feel prepared and let you share any special requests, colours, or items you’d love to include. On the day, you’ll arrive at my warm, peaceful studio, where everything will already be set up based on your preferences. You can choose between more posed studio images, or a lifestyle session which is less posed and more natural. Or you could have a session that includes elements of both!
If you’ve chosen to include a makeover, you’ll be pampered while I begin photographing your baby. This is your time to relax, breathe deeply, and enjoy a few quiet moments while I gently pose and photograph your newborn in soft, natural positions. I begin with unwrapped or nude poses, then move into wrapped and prop images, followed by sibling and family portraits.
All newborn photography sessions are completely baby-led and may take up to 4 hours. I allow plenty of time for feeding, soothing, and settling. If you’re bringing older siblings, it often works well to have them join us later in the session, so they’re happy and refreshed when it’s their turn in front of the camera.

WHEN is the best time for your newborn session?
The best time to photograph your baby is when your little one is between 5 and 21 days old, while they’re still very sleepy and able to curl up naturally for those classic newborn poses.
To ensure your session takes place during this window of time, I always encourage parents to get in touch during pregnancy. Keep in mind that your booking is guaranteed even if your little one is early or late (we will simply adjust the shoot date accordingly), so booking in advance comes at no risk!
After your newborn session
After your session, you’ll be invited to a private online viewing where you’ll see your images for the first time. You’ll be able to choose your package and explore a range of stunning print options, including fine art albums and heirloom-quality wall pieces designed to proudly display your memories in your home.

A £99 non-refundable retainer is required within 24 hours of booking to secure your date in the diary. This will be deducted from your total (For example if you choose the £399 package there will be £300 remaining to pay) A minimum order of £299 is required, there is no obligation to purchase any images if you don’t want to. I do not charge a separate session fee, the photoshoot is included in the package.
The HMUA fee is £80 and separate to the packages above, a £40 deposit of this is required at the time of booking, the rest payable on the day. Their fee includes Hair as well as Make-Up.
